Kosice is the second biggest city after Bratislava. The city has a rich and famous past, which left jewels of architecture. After extensive reconstruction work the historic downtown, which is the largest urban monument reserve on Slovakia. Almost all best sightseeings concentrate on Košice's long pedestrianized main square, which is called Hlavna ulica at its northern and southern extremities, Hlavne namestie to the north of the catedral, and namestie Slobody to the south of the catedral. Along it place the extraodinary Gothic Cathedral of St. Elizabeth, its charcoal-coloured stone recently sandblasted back to its original honeyed hue; St. Michael’s Chapel, Levoca House (the former warehouse of the trading-settlement merchants), and several other churches and palaces. Don‘t miss the park of the Singing fountain, the peculiar Vojtech Loffler Museum at Alzbetina. Quite unusual attraction is the Miklus Prison, whose original dimly lit dungeons and claustrophobic cells graphically transport you into its history as the city prison and torture chamber. The city center is a pleasant surprise this far east, and boasts a number of fine restaurants and hotels as well.
