If you wanna see where the world famous Port wine comes, go to Porto. Porto is both the city that provided a nation with a name and a fortified wine known worldwide: port. Porto is a sweet Portuguese fortified wine from the Douro Valley. Only the product from Portugal may be denomined as Port. Porto was the seaport city of at the mouth of the Douro River, from here much of the product was brought to market or for export to other countries in Europe. The Douro Valley where Port wine is produced was defined and found as a protected region, or appellation in 1756 — making it the second oldest defined and protected wine region in the world.
Today Porto is still important city, the main country port. It‘s the second largest metropolis of Portugal. The capital of north country and the commercial and business center.
The industry comes together with history and tradition here. The historic centre of Porto was declared UNESCO World Heritage. It is a highly atmospheric town that has become known for its monuments by renowned architects (Rem Koolhaas' Casa da Musica, Nicolau Nasoni's Clerigos Tower, Gustave Eiffel's Dona Maria Bridge, or Siza Vieira's Serralves Museum)
This city doesn't disapoint. Oporto is plenty of local color and a singular atmosphere. To get know the town we recomend a queit walk through its streets, taking time to admire the typical granite houses and monuments, delighting a tram ride along the banks of the river, or even going down the Douro River for a cruise under the city´s six bridges, from where you can look up an entirely different view of the city.Furthermore, there are somesthing you must do: like take a stroll by the riverfront in Foz , have a drink at nice "Cafe Majestic", come in to Lello and Irmco" bookshop, look up to the tile panels inside Sco Bento Station and on the faeades of Carmo and Capela das Almas churches, browse through Bolhco Market. The best place for shopping is Rua de Santa Catarina. This is main shopping street with its trim boutiques and animated crowds. Malls have the designer wares of noteworthy clothiers, or sometimes uneven distribution of upscale and workaday shops.
