Valletta is the capital of Malta. It is the first New age's city built according plans (straight streets) on the drawing table - stronghold with city's gate, fortifications and bastions. Valletta has valuable architecture from the XVIth century - St. John's Co-Cathedral (was built between 1573 and 1578 by the Knights of Malta), magnificent Grandmaster's Palace, St Paul's Anglican Cathedral (building was finished in 1844, within are keeping relics of St.Paul).
The present (the original gate was designed by Francesco Laparelli de Carotona - military engineer, built between 1566 and 1569; in 1632 was added more ornate by architect Tommaso Dingli) structure of the City Gate was built in 1964 and it is the main entrance to Valletta and is included into UNESCO World Heritage list.
La Valette laid the foundation stone of Valletta, but he died on 21 August 1568 and didn't saw completion of the city. He was buried in the Our Lady of the Victories church, later, when St. John's Co-Cathedral was built, his remains were reburied there.
