Skopje is the biggest and the capital city of Macedonia. First time it was mentioned in the IIIth century B.C. by Klaudie Diolomej. The earthquake in 518 destroyed architectonic buildings, public baths, antique amphitheatre, large
basilica with mosaic floors and a great number of other monuments/buildings. In 1946 Skopje became the capital of the country with a university, Macedonian science and art gallery, endured Bizantian stronghold, mosque of turk's and
other buildings from the XV-XXth centuries (part of them were damaged during the earthquake in 1963), not
far from town here is ruins of antique city - Scupi. Industry is very developed on these goods - textile,
handicrafts, metallurgy, chemistry, leather. Here are a great number of museums - Museum of Skopje
Old Bazaar, Natural Sciences Museum of Macedonia, Archeological, City Museum of Skopje and others, also
are a lot of munuments and a library within about 1.000.000 books.
