The Dresden Zwinger a symbol of Dresden in all guide books. The name Zwinger translation is 'interspace', and derivated from its location between former town fortifications. This baroque complex was built between 1710 and 1732. The complex consist of six pavilions connected by great galleries. The most impressive pavilions are the Rampart Pavilion and the Glockenspiel pavilion. The most famous work of art is Raphael‘s Sistine Madonna in Picture Gallery. Tourists enter the Zwinger Courtyard through the Crown Gate, whose distinctive silhouette has made it a well-known Dresden landmark.
