Ossury in Sedlec (Kostnice Sedlec)

We strongly recomanding to visit Kostnice Sedlec. Ossury is located in Sedlec, suburb of Kutna Hora. It is a small unique unrepeatable Christian chapel, because is decorated with human bones!

Long ago there were placed a graves. Around 1400 a Gothic All Saints' Chapel, was built in the center of the cemetery with a valuted upper level and a lower chapel to be used as an ossuary for the mass graves unearthed during construction. Cemetery had to be greatly enlarged during plague in the mid 14th century and after the Hussite wars in the early 15th century, thousands of people were buried there. Later in 1511 a half-blind monk was given the macabre and unenviable task to gather the bones from the liquidated graves and putting them in the crypt to make place for new customers". Subsequently in 1870 Schwarzenberg family  assignmented for wood-carver Frantisek Rindt to arrange bones. The result is speaking for itself now. Phantasmagorian inter is inside, everything is done from 40 thousand bones of people: altar, solid chandeliiers, garlands, even Schwarzenberg family blazon etc.

You can feel the death and peace atmosphere. It is chilling and astonishing at ones. However it's a normal Christian church with a Christ on the cross figure and all the rest.
