Nicosia is the biggest city of Cyprus and its capital (the North side is unrecognized Turk's republic capital).
In this city are over 50 churches and mosques, in the North side is one of the town's symbol - mosque of Selimiye (till the XVIth it was St.Sophia cathedral). Old town is surrounded by the wall with 11 forts and 3 gates built in 1567-1570 to protect from turks.
First settlements came here about in 2500 years B.C. First time in historical sources town (as Ledra) was mentioned in 672 years B.C.
Since the IX-Xth century Nicosia is the capital of all Cyprus island.
In 1960 Cyprus declared its independence and in 1963 Nicosia was divided into two sectors - North for turks, South for greeks.
Visitors should see St.John's cathedral (built in 1665, within are marvelous frescoes from the XVIIIth century); restored gates of Amahostoso; stronghold's wall (built in the XVIth century) and other places, including museums and galleries.
