Rijeka was established in the VIIth century by Slovenes and today is important business, trade, industrial and cultural center.

Rijeka is at a point where the Adriatic sea made its deepest incision into the European continent, thanks to it, harbour and shipping center is developed in very high level.

After the construction of a railway (in 1728), Rijeka was connected with the entire central Europe via Zagreb and become one of the leading harbour (warehousing capacity is more than 1 500 000 m²).

Here is university (established in 1973), seafarer higher school, a lot of architectural monuments from the XIVth-XVIIIth centuries.

Because of the great coast in Rijeka is possibile wide diversity of sporting activities - sailing regattas, fishing contests, swimming and water polo, because of mountains and during winter months - hiking, mountaineering, amateur and professional

skier, hunting and other interesting things to spend a leisure time. Rijeka is also known for its annual Carnival, which is the largest carnival in a country.
